The Syrian Ministry of Energy warned of a new flood wave on the Euphrates River that will peak this evening, with the stock of the Euphrates Dam reaching 97%. The flooding caused extensive damage to crops and homes and destroyed several bridges in the area.
The areas adjacent to the Euphrates River in Syria have witnessed widespread damage due to the high level of water, as agricultural crops have been severely damaged and a number of houses that their residents can no longer reach have been flooded. The flooding also caused the destruction and flooding of several vital bridges in the area. Haitham Bakour, Director General of the Euphrates Dam Foundation, explained that the sharp rise in the water level was the result of the combination of several factors, most notably the increase in incomes Water and high rainfall rates in northern and eastern Syria during the current season. These factors led to the stock of the Euphrates Dam lakes reaching a record level exceeding 97 percent of its capacity. This situation coincided with an unprecedented Turkish decision to pass about two thousand cubic meters of water per second, with the opening of all the gates of the spillway, which exacerbated the water crisis in the region. The Department of Energy has warned of a new waterwave of 1,600 cubic meters It began to enter the administrative borders of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, expecting to peak at ten on Thursday evening. The Syrian authorities responded with urgent emergency measures, as the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management announced the start of work to strengthen the affected part of Al-Asharah Bridge in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, in addition to raising earth berms around the Tarif water pumping station to protect it from flooding. The Emergency Committee also identified three approved river crossings, namely political and Baghiliya Engineer Osama Abu Zaid, Assistant Minister of Energy for Water Resources Affairs, warned of the danger of sudden floods and drifts that may threaten lives and property, especially in areas near the banks of the river and river islands. Rescue teams equipped with ambulances, boats and divers have been placed at approved crossings to ensure rapid response and safe passage of humanitarian cases.
