Israeli forces announced the killing of Mohammed Odeh, the new military commander of Hamas, in an operation that targeted several buildings in the center of Gaza City. Israeli officials said Odeh was one of the last senior commanders involved in planning the Oct. 7 attacks.
On Wednesday, the Israeli armed forces and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced the killing of Muhammad Odeh, who recently took over the leadership of the military wing of Hamas from Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was killed earlier. The IDF spokesman explained that the operation was carried out in cooperation with the Shin Bet internal security service, targeting several buildings in the heart of Gaza City that were used as hideouts for the return. He pointed out that the operation was the result of an intelligence follow-up It lasted for months to monitor the movements of the Palestinian leader and his assistants. According to the Israeli military statement, Odeh took over the leadership of Hamas's military wing during the past two weeks, and was supervising the movement's intelligence pillar. He was also accused of participating in the planning and coordination of the operations carried out on 7 th October 2023. For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Katz confirmed that Odeh is considered the "fourth commander of the military wing of Hamas" who is killed within the framework of Katz renewed the pledge to“liquidate whoever led the October 7 attack,” stressing that Israel will continue its efforts to prevent Hamas from ruling in Gaza militarily or civilly. It is noteworthy that the operation also targeted an adjacent apartment belonging to a Hamas member accused of participating in the October attacks, who was within the circle close to the assassinated leader, according to Israeli sources.
