Europe's highest political echelons have expressed their deep sorrow at this tragedy.
A real tragedy occurred this morning in the Bugenhaut region of northern Belgium, where a passenger train collided with a small school bus at a railway crossing, killing four people and injuring several other passengers. Ann Berger, a spokeswoman for the Belgian Federal Police, told local VRT channel that the stricken bus was carrying seven pupils, as well as the bus driver and a school companion. Frederic Sacri, spokesperson for Enfrable, the company responsible for operating the Belgian railway network, provided precise details about the circumstances of the tragic accident, explaining that the collision occurred exactly at eight o'clock in the morning. The train involved in the accident was heading to the next station, which is only about one kilometer from the accident site, Sakry said in private statements to Agence France-Presse. Describing the severity of the collision as “very violent” and the outcome as“tragic.” At the political level, Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quentin expressed his deep sorrow and sadness at this “tragic incident” that shook Belgian society. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed shared European feelings of grief. Von der Leyen posted an influential tweet on the "X" platform, in which she said: “I am deeply saddened by the news of this tragic accident between the train and the school bus in Bougenhout, and I extend my sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to all the families of the victims and their families in this painful ordeal, the whole of Europe shares Belgium's sorrows.”
