IMO rejects Iran's alternative route to Strait of Hormuz

The IMO Maritime Safety Committee adopted an Emirati resolution rejecting the Iranian alternative route to the Strait of Hormuz. The decision received broad international support and expressed grave concern over Iranian activities that threatened the safety of navigation and resulted in the death of 11 sailors and the stranding of more than 20,000 sailors.

The UAE has achieved an important diplomatic achievement with the adoption of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee's decision during the 111th session, which was supported and co-sponsored by a large number of member states around the world. Through this resolution, Member States expressed grave concern over Iranian practices in the Strait of Hormuz, including the use of drones, missiles and naval mines, which pose a threat dangerous to the safety of international maritime navigation. These attacks killed at least 11 sailors and stranded more than 20,000. The resolution stressed the vital importance of maintaining freedom of navigation for commercial vessels in the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman, stressing the right of transit passage in this strategic waterway. It also called on States to take coordinated steps to ensure the safety of commercial navigation in the region. The UAE and the Gulf states have rejected The sisterly categorically proposed alternative path from Iran, where it issued a joint statement signed by Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. States also refused to establish the so-called Gulf Strait Authority, which they called misleading for claiming sovereignty over the management of ship traffic. His Excellency Suhail Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, praised the decision, stressing that the international community has clearly expressed its rejection of Iran's illegal actions.
