The Abnoub center in Assiut Governorate witnessed a horrific massacre that killed eight people and injured five others, when a 40-year-old man suffering from psychological disorders opened fire randomly on citizens with an automatic weapon. On the evening of May 18, the usual quiet of the central street of Abnoub center in Assiut turned into a tragic and horrific spectacle. The events began when 48-year-old Atef Khalil drove a jeep recklessly and hit a motorcycle before fleeing the scene without rescuing the injured. The next morning, the Public Prosecution issued its decision to authorize the burial of the eight bodies, amidst the atmosphere of deep sadness that gripped the entire region.
