The Ministry of Transport is implementing an ambitious project to modernize the newHelwan-Marj metro line according to international standards. The project includes the supply of 55 modern trains from the French company Alstom and the rehabilitation of 23 old units in cooperation with the Spanish company CAF, with the aim of reducing the towing time to two and a half minutes.
The Ministry of Transport has launched a comprehensive development plan to modernize the first line of the subway (Helwan - New Marj) to meet the highest international standards of urban transport. This strategic plan aims to improve the service provided to citizens by reducing the design distillation time from 4.5 minutes to only two and a half minutes, which contributes to alleviating the suffocating congestion on the stations' sidewalks. The project witnessed a significant achievement with the arrival of the first two of the 55 newly contracted trains on its supply with the prestigious French company "Alstom". The first train arrived on May 12, 2025, followed by the second train on January 8, 2026 and settled in Kotsika's specialized workshop. The contract includes the provision of advanced maintenance services for a period of eight years, to ensure the sustainability of optimal performance and the compatibility of trains with the latest smart control systems. Parallel to the supply program, the Spanish specialized company “CAF” undertakes the task of rehabilitating and modernizing 23 trains Old Japanese models. The comprehensive development process includes the renewal of internal systems and engines to meet modern technical specifications, with the signing of an additional maintenance contract in September 2025 for a period of 120 months with a ten-year guarantee. The comprehensive development system was completed with the support of the infrastructure modernization of an international coalition led by Colas Rail, according to a contract signed in August 2024. The project covers the development of signal, communication and central control systems. Besides the work of the advanced electrical and electromechanical forces, under the technical supervision of the global consultant "Sestra" to ensure the application of the highest international quality standards and qualify the line to accommodate the future population increase.
